Joshua’s joy - One-legged student achieves his GSAT dream

This year's graduating class of the Grateful Hill Primary School in St Catherine included a member who everyone dubbed special.

Twelve-year-old Joshua Bryan was born with one leg. He successfully navigated primary school to finish with an 88 average in the recent Grade Six Achievement Test and earned a place at Oberlin High School.

Joshua told The Sunday Gleaner that he is very pleased with the school where he has been placed and would go there to do his best to make his mother, Rosemarie Hunt, proud.

"I am happy with the school that I will be going. I chose Calabar and Oberlin, so I am happy to be closer to home, and my mother will have it a little easier," said Joshua.

He added that he feels a sense of accomplishment, having completed six years at Grateful Hill Primary where he was accepted by the staff and students, who made him feel special and helped to strengthen his resolve to do well.

Principal of the school, George Moodie, told our news team that while all his students are special, he was drawn to Joshua by virtue of his sheer determination and his high level of cooperation.

According to Moodie, Joshua is aiming to become an engineer and he has the right approach to work to be successful.

"The students all treated Joshua special. Despite not having a limb, Joshua is determined to work, play and carry out any task he is given.

"Joshua is one of the success stories at Grateful Hill. We will be moving into E-Learning come September, and he shows that with proper application every child can learn. There are many other Joshuas out there," added Moodie.
