Ganja seized in Green Island, Hanover valued at $11 million, says police

The police have valued the 2,734 pounds of ganja, which was seized in a major operation in Green Island, Hanover, on Tuesday night, at $11 million.

“There is absolutely no doubt that this is biggest drug bust in the parish this year,” a Hanover-based policeman told The Gleaner on condition of anonymity.

“The fact that we also seized two illegal firearms is a bonus.”

Three persons, two men and a woman, were arrested in connection with the seizure.

Two vehicles were also seized at the scene.

“We are not yet ready to release the names of the persons in custody as we are pursuing other leads, which might result in the arrest of other persons,” the policeman noted.

“The three persons in custody will most definitely be charged.”

It is reported that about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday a police team attached to the narcotics division carried out an operation along a section of Davis Cove Beach in Green Island where they observed unusual movements.

The team went to investigate and reportedly saw the three accused standing beside two Toyota Hiace mini-buses.

They were intercepted and the vehicles were searched.

During the search, the team allegedly recovered the compressed ganja, a .38 pistol loaded with five .38 rounds, a 12 gauge shotgun and a quantity of 12 gauge cartridges.

All three persons were taken into custody.

“We strongly suspect that this shipment was destined for the gun for drugs market. 

“With all the problems we are having with illegal guns, we are pleased that we were able to intercept this shipment," the policeman said.
