'Chucky' Brown Trial | Defence suggests INDECOM paid for Brown's family to relocate

Attorney Norman Godfrey today suggested that the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) paid for the wife and child of murder accused police Constable Collis 'Chucky' Brown to stay in a St Andrew hotel for six to seven weeks after Brown was arrested on January 14, 2014.

During his cross-examination of INDECOM Chief Investigator Warren Williams at the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston, Godfrey posed the question of whether Brown's wife had been relocated to a hotel after Brown was arrested due to his client's concern for their safety.

"I can't recall at this time. I don't deal with things like those," Williams said.

Godfrey also asked if INDECOM was paying for this accommodation, but again Williams said he would not know that.

The defence attorney suggested that the arrangement for Brown's family to relocate was done pursuant to agreements with Brown and INDECOM before he was taken into custody. 

But Williams insisted: "As I said before, I conducted the interviews with Brown and obtained a warrant for his arrest." 

He also rejected the suggestion that meetings were held with other investigators to discuss the safety of Brown's family.

Meanwhile, during the examination by lead prosecutor Caroline Hay, Williams said that he was the one who operated the recording device during the cautioned interview with Brown.

He also said Brown was cautioned on a number of occasions during the interview and a number of inquiries were made about his lawyer.

Brown is being tried for the 2009 murder of Robert 'Gutty' Dawkins and the 2012 murder of Dwayne Douglas and Andrew Fearon, both in Clarendon.
 
He is also being tried for wounding with intent and conspiracy to commit murder.
