Spanish Town plant shutdown, NWC cites high acidic level in water source

The National Water Commission (NWC) is reporting that it has shutdown its Spanish Town Treatment Plant in St Catherine.

The NWC says this is because of a high acidic level recorded in samples taken from the river source that serves the plant.

As a result, the agency says several communities served by the facility will experience disruptions in their regular water supply.

Areas include Spanish Town, Westmore, Hampton Green, Lakemoor Gardens, Newton Avenue, Nugent Street, McCoy's Land, Mayfair Mews, Brunswick Avenue, and Job's Lane.

The communities of White Water Meadows, Hartlands, McCook’s Pen, Leiba Gardens, Sydenham Gardens, Wedge Wood Gardens, Willowdene Housing Scheme and Hopedale Housing Scheme are also being affected.

The NWC says normal operations at the plant will be restored as soon as the issue has been resolved.

Meanwhile, the NWC is advising that water supply from the Guys Hill Treatment plant is now being restored to customers in the areas served.

However, it says the Sue River System remains out of operation as inflows are impacted by high levels of turbidity.
