Canadian man sentenced to mandatory 2 years in prison, fined $3M

A Canadian man was sentenced to two years imprisonment and fined $3 million after he was convicted on drug related charges in the St James Parish Court on Tuesday.

John Edwards was arrested by Narcotics police on September 17 for attempting to export 20 pounds of cocaine to Canada.

In court, Edwards was found guilty of possession of cocaine and fined $1 million. He was also found guilty of attempting to export cocaine for which he was fined $2 million. The Canadian was sentenced to a mandatory two-year imprisonment. 

He will have to serve another 12 months if the $3 million fine is not paid. The sentences are to run consecutively.
