JTA shocked by Reid's resignation

The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) says it is shocked and surprised by the sudden resignation of Ruel Reid as Minister of Education Youth and Information.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced this morning that he requested and received Reid’s resignation to allow any investigation into allegations of corruption at the ministry.
Holness said he acted in keeping with the principles of good governance.
In addition to resigning as minister Reid also stepped down as a government senator.
The development comes a day after The Gleaner reported that the Auditor General’s Department is currently undertaking a performance audit of the ministry.
“As a critical stakeholder, we will continue to monitor the development within this ministry because education is too important a sector to be shrouded in alleged corruption and controversy.
“We remain vigilant and responsible in the best interest of the sector,” the JTA said in a statement.
