St Catherine seniors feted

Some 300 senior citizens in West Central St Catherine were feted on Wednesday by West Central Hope, a registered charity initiated by member of parliament for the constituency Dr Christoper Tufton.

The seniors were brought from all areas of the constituency to Kitson Town, where they were fed a main course, given the traditional bun and cheese, presented with gifts, and entertained by gospel singers Nadine Brown and Nicholet Brown, along with JCDC bronze winner Breanna Lovely.

Tufton, who spent most of the day frolicking with the senior citizens, told The Gleaner that West Central Hope is a separate entity from the political organisation and has been in existence for three years.

Third Easter treat

“This is our third year staging this Easter treat. We concentrate on the indigent because they are the most vulnerable among us. We look at areas such as sports, education, community development, and health, hence we have a health team doing blood pressure and diabetes checks,” Tufton said.

“We do several projects throughout the year. Today, we are treating some 300 indigent senior citizens who would normally, on a day like this, be shut in without any fun, so if only one time for the year, we see it as our obligation to treat them,” he said.

Tufton said that West Central Hope has so far issued 55 wheelchairs, distributed 1,880 food packages, and assisted 6,500 children with back-to-school dental and medical tests, as well as providing ongoing care for numerous house-bound seniors.
