Sagicor Foundation to award $9 million in scholarships

The Sagicor Foundation has announced that its scholarship programme is now open and will be awarding 87 scholarships to tertiary and secondary students.

According to the foundation, both new and enrolled students at the tertiary level at select universities can apply with the possibility of receiving a scholarship of up to $300,000 towards their tuition fees. Applicants must be attending or have been accepted to any of the following institutions and pursuing a first degree – The University of the West Indies, Mona; the University of Technology, Jamaica; Northern Caribbean University; Caribbean Maritime University; The Mico University College; Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts; and the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean.

Tertiary applications are accepted online only via the Sagicor Foundation’s newly launched portal – sagicorfoundationscholarships.com. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed from which 20 candidates will be selected for scholarships.

Scholarships to secondary schools are awarded to children of subscribers to the Government Employee Administrative Services Only and Commercial Health Policies administered by Sagicor Life Jamaica. Scholarships are valued at $50,000 for each scholar, with the scholarship being renewable each year, up to five years, if the child maintains an 80 per cent or ‘B’ average.

Under the secondary scholarship programme, the champion boy and champion girl of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association/Sagicor National Primary and Junior High School Athletic Championship also receive a scholarship. This year, an educational grant will be provided to each parish champion boy and girl. Each scholarship is valued at $50,000.

Additionally, educational grants are also provided to 25 children of Jamaica Defence Force staff. These grants are valued at $40,000 each to assist with back-to-school expenses.

Scholarships to be disbursed are valued at over $9 million.
