MoBay’s Jerk Fest was an electrifying affair

True to its 15-year tradition, the 2024 staging of the Montego Bay Jerk& Food Festival at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre on Emancipation Day was rich in food, fun and frolic, much to the delight of the thousands of patrons who turned out for the annual event.

“The overwhelming turnout and positive feedback from attendees highlight the festival’s significance as a cherished event for both locals and visitors,” said the festival’s promoter, businessman John Lindo. “We are thrilled with the success of this year’s event, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to the patrons for their incredible support, and to our sponsors for their invaluable contributions.”

As is customary, the cuisine was once again a big attraction, as it was a case of everything jerk, which exposed the taste buds of the patrons to a wide array of home-made seasonings and spices. A strong aroma of well-seasoned food hung over the venue as the various vendors prepared their delicacies.

“The food is what brings me here year after year as I just love the smell of jerk,” said Yvonne Smith, who journeyed all the way from south Trelawny to attend the event. “I love everything jerk….chicken, fish, pork, crab…I am just a fan of jerk.”

It was magical for the children, as they were offered a variety of attractions ranging from bounce-about, marching band, to rides on the mechanical bull. They were also able to take photographs with the festival mascot and have their faces painted with a range of vibrant colours.

“This festival was not just about food and music; it was a family affair with activities and entertainment for all ages,” said Lindo. He was particularly pleased at seeing the number of fathers who were at the venue bonding with their children.

According to Lindo, the cultural displays and interactive zones were specifically chosen, so that both parents and children could participate. Also, he said the culinary experiences was designed to be totally family-friendly.

As is customary, the festival ended with a concert, which this year featured local artistes Rajah Wild, who delivered an electrifying performance; Kraff, who gave the patrons a lot to cheer about; and the dazzling Shaniel Muir, who must have won over some new fans with a soulful set, which had the audience fully engaged. Prince Saj and Felony also gave pleasing performances.

“The Montego Bay Jerk & Food Festival remains committed to promoting Jamaican culture, supporting local businesses, and providing a platform for local artists to shine,” said Lindo.

The festival is much loved and respected as each year, part of the proceeds is given back to the community in the form of school supplies and bursaries for needy students.
