Three sisters and a dream. That became the reality for Dwayna, Shavelle and Shaniel Mayler, who decided to join the fight to preserve the environment by creating eco-friendly totes et al.

“My sisters and I have always had a passion for making things. I think we got that from our mom. We got bored and just really wanted to do something different that could possibly become a business venture for us. So we thought, why not make bags? And with the ban on plastic, we thought it was the opportune time to jump right on it,” Shavelle shared with Outlook.

First thing’s first: they needed a name. One that was edgy and chic, representing both the culture of the brand as well as the family unit. This gave birth to Thr3 Sistas. All three sisters play an integral role in making the business a success.

All in the bag

Initially, they wanted to build tote bags for shopping purposes, but then requests flew in for other styles, so, they are now creating fashionable bags for everyday wear.

“We currently have three types of bags: totes, clutches and wine bags. Our totes can be used for shopping, as a beach bag and they’re trendy enough to be carried to run just about any errand daily. Our clutches are a woman’s best friend: we supply a wide range of shapes and sizes for any occasion. And our wine bags are great gift items, and can be used to add flavor to your home décor,” she said. Wth the high demand for the product, along with customers’ suggestions, the trio is working assiduously towards expanding the current line to include more designs.

Their choice of fabric was crucial in determining the durability as well as the overall look and feel of the product. Poised on brand image, they pride themselves on providing value for money, ensuring that persons are getting value for their money. Hence, they ensure that the materials used is a reflection of this.

After officially launching on January 20 of this year, it has been non-stop bag making since. Customers, Shavelle says, are loving the bags and the feedback has been nothing but positive. Clients have also taken the liberty of giving Thr3 Sistas, suggestions on how to improve and create that ‘wow’ effect with various designs. Additionally, their international market is also growing in strides, so gratitude for the overwhelming support is a definite must for the ‘likkle but tallawah’ company.

The only obstacle they have been facing so far is time management. With all three sisters working outside of their business, time management has become the major obstacles they have faced as entrepreneurs.

“It is very important for us to schedule our time properly to ensure that we reserve adequate time to complete our orders.”

So what’s next for Thr3 Sistas? They hope to branch out and make bags for men, and they are looking to incorporate handmade home decor into their line of products.

Shavelle’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to just go for it.

“Your biggest setback is you. You only need to make the conscious decision to do it and it can be done. Doing something that you love makes it worthwhile, you will never live to regret it.”
