Having a father is crucial to a child’s overall development, and while every experience is different, this chef dad, Evrol Ebanks, describes the experience of fatherhood as being a chief cornerstone for his child every step of the way, while providing a well of guidance and support.

“When I first heard that I was going to become a father, I guess one could describe the moment as ‘sobering’. I came to the realisation that I will now be responsible for the upbringing of a human being that I part-created,” Said Ebanks.

Ebanks is a full-time chef who specialises in catering and personal chef services and as such, he has a tight schedule. However, he goes above and beyond to ensure he connects with his child, Kiahra, who lives in the United States with her grandmother.

“Balancing your time to ensure the right amount of bonding is crucial. It can be quite challenging, especially if you don’t live with the child due to whatever reasons. In my case, I ensure to create times in my schedule. Communication is extremely important. If it’s even a phone call,” he said.

When asked about his little one, Ebanks described her as a smart conversationalist, who he enjoys spending lots of time with. After he checks the books and do a bit of reading, they venture to the great outdoors to frolic like children during the summertime break.

MAIN CHALLENGE

“My main challenge is not being able to spend as much time with her as my father did with me. He was a good man and we had a good relationship. He taught me that a little hard work never killed anyone, and I hope to pass that on to my daughter, along with instilling the importance of being honest in everything she does,” he said.

When asked about his advice to fathers: “Be prepared for some sleepless nights. Bond with your child/children and allow them to trust you.”
