Shipping industry promotes workplace wellness
Members of the Port of Kingston business district streamed to the Shipping Association of Jamaica's (SAJ) head office on Fourth Avenue, New Port West last Friday to partake in a plethora of lifestyle and beauty services for the first-ever workplace wellness expo mounted by the association.
Hosted in collaboration with Club Elite, a corporate lifestyle and wellness club, the SAJ's exposition offered patrons across the shipping industry free and heavily discounted spa, beauty, detox, diet, and weight-loss services, as well as health checks, vision screening, dental, and financial wellness options.
commitment
In declaring the expo open, group CEO of the SAJ Trevor Riley pointed to the importance of an individual and collective commitment from those who worked on the Port of Kingston to improving their health so that they could enjoy long, productive, happy lives.
"The workplace is ideally positioned to sensitise persons to the advantages of
living a healthy lifestyle. This is a two-way street as the workplace also benefits from wellness programmes via improved employee health, productivity, morale, reduced absenteeism, and informed employees on health issues. We are proud to say that we have a robust wellness programme for our staff right here at the SAJ that is reaping benefits such as the staging of this expo," said Riley.
He added that the promotion of healthy lifestyles within the port community continues on June 27 with the staging of the Shipping Industry 5K Road Race in New Port West.
Lifestyle-related problems continue to be the number-one cause of death locally. This is a major cause for concern for many business owners and administrators as the cost of health care continues to spiral upwards and the benefits that can be derived from a healthy lifestyle are often taken for granted by the average Jamaican worker.
