Shipping district buzzing ahead of charity 5K
As the timer winds down to race day for the Shipping Industry 5K Road Race on Saturday, June 27, 2015, organisers have extended the registration deadline to Wednesday, June 24, to accommodate the large number of persons expressing interest.
This race offers runners, walkers, and persons with infant strollers the experience of a one-of-a-kind 5K route that takes them through the important shipping business district of Newport West/Marcus Garvey Drive. Start time is 6:30 a.m., with a full slate of start- and finish-line activities.
Entry fee is $1,000 per person and $800 per person for groups of 50 and above. Registration can be done online at www.runningeventsja.com.
"We are trying to make this 5K bigger and better than last year. We have expanded our target charities to include the Tavares Gardens Primary School. As such, we are raising funds to support our programmes at this institution, as well as at our long-standing charity, the Marcus Garvey School, which we have adopted.
Part proceeds also go towards the operation of the SAJ's Mobile Clinic, which offers free or reduced-cost medical screening and treatment within various communities across the island," said Janice Budd, operations manager for communications and member services at the Shipping Association of Jamaica.
"As such, we are extremely grateful to our membership within the maritime sector, and externally, to movers and shakers in business, who are supporting our charities through sponsorship of this event. I speak of:
- The RJR Communications Group
- Wisynco
- JP Tropical Foods
- JMMB Insurance
- PROVEN Wealth
- Power 106
- Transocean
- Lannaman & Morris Shipping
- Advantum
- Assessment Recoveries Limited
- Delgado Medical
- Allied Insurance Brokers
- Rituals and
Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica.
SAJ members and other participating companies within the Newport West shipping district are busy designing special T-shirts as they vie for the Best T-Shirt Award. Enthusiastic and competitive SAJ team members were also spotted training for the special staff awards up for grabs this year.
The SAJ is also offering free healthy breakfast wraps - provided by popular eatery Moby Dick - to each registered participant.
