Cool gusts of early morning sea breeze heralded the arrival of hundreds of athletically minded participants to the shipping district of New Port West last Saturday, June 27, 2015.

The normally quiet Saturday was broken by the sounds of a vibrant warm-up session under way and by the sounds of laughter and the occasional robust challenge among running mates. The occasion was the staging of the Shipping Industry 5K Road Race, which was being held at this location for the first time ever.

Organised by the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ), the 5K was intended to engage the shipping industry and the wider community in an activity that promotes wellness and boosts the impact of its corporate social responsibility projects within the communities in which the SAJ operates.

A percentage of the funds raised from the event will go towards schools within the district, including the Tavares Gardens Primary and Marcus Garvey schools, and the operations of the association's mobile clinic. The SAJ supports activities at the Tavares Gardens Primary School; pays teacher salaries at Marcus Garvey for eight months of the year; and the SAJ staff, on their own initiative, has set up a fund that contributes to a feeding programme at the school on a monthly basis.

The mobile clinic is stationed in various communities and medical services are provided to residents at little to no cost.
