Juan Carlos Croston, president of the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA), has stated his organisation's intention to review its code of ethics to promote gender equality in the maritime sector throughout the Caribbean region. The CSA president delivered this message to the Women in Maritime Association, Caribbean (WiMAC) at the opening ceremony of their annual conference being held in Belize from October 16-19, 2018.

The CSA president noted that the General Council of the CSA has already taken the decision to undertake the review of the association's code of ethics and that it will be done within the context of Caribbean cultures and in close collaboration with WiMAC with the aim of developing policies to govern the actions and behaviours of all industry participants. Croston assured conference participants that the CSA "will be pro-active in ending sexual harassment and in promoting and nurturing a culture of gender equality in our maritime industry".

In delivering his greeting from the CSA to the WiMAC conference, Croston noted the importance of strengthening both the institutions and members of the Caribbean maritime community. The CSA president said: "Along this path of institutional development, a stronger WiMAC means greater empowerment for the region's entire shipping industry."

The CSA president also expressed his organisation's commitment to continuing and deepening its support to WiMAC and to broadening and strengthening areas of cooperation and joint participation in programmes and projects.

WiMAC was launched in 2015 and comprises female maritime professionals committed to increasing the performance, participation, and contribution of women in the maritime sector. WiMAC has membership in 15 Caribbean islands. It is one of the seven regional organisations of female maritime professionals established under the banner of the International Maritime Organization.

The CSA is the voice of the Caribbean shipping industry and was established in 1971 to facilitate the development of an efficient, viable Caribbean shipping industry.
