The Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) successfully staged a supervisory management workshop for more than 70 participants from Jamaica and several Caribbean territories, on June 3.

The virtual seminar was held to provide participants with the skills and competencies to develop, motivate and lead teams. It targeted professionals who are middle managers or supervisors seeking to make the transition to middle management.

The seminar was led by Dr Olivene Burke, a lecturer and research consultant at the University of the West Indies. The participants, who represented approximately 20 companies from seven countries including Bermuda, Barbados, the Cayman Islands, Grenada, Panama and Suriname, explored topics including the role of a supervisor, team building, conflict resolution, ethics and values and modelling supervisory behaviour.

The daylong seminar included breakout sessions where participants shared and contrasted experiences with management and engaged in group discourse to address issues in the workplace.

The supervisory management course was the first in a series of workshops which will be undertaken by the SAJ to upskill and train professionals within the industry and those in the wider public and private sector.
