Viva Mexico: 206th Independence Celebration

Long Live Mexico! Viva Mexico reigned supreme at their 206th anniversary independence celebration held on the lawns of Devon House last Tuesday night.
Red, green and white soared high in jubilation for the Mexican nation as members of the diplomatic corp, well wishers and Mexican nationals residing in Jamaica, came out in style to commemorate the grand occasion.
They took the time out to greet Mexican Ambassador Cecilia Jaber and her father, Gorge Jaber, who flew in from Texas just to be with her on such a big night. She later thanked him in her address for his presence.
Extending gratitude to all in attendance, Jaber spoke of the high spirit of dignity and fulfilment of her country as well as their feat in defying their own destiny. "Mexico has given priority to its culture: mariachi music and dance will pave any path to mutual understanding," she stated.
She highlighted too that this was a double celebration. Not only was it the 206th independence of Mexico, it was also 50 years of established diplomatic relations between Jamaica and Mexico.
A "deep sense of collaboration and friendship," were the words she used to describe the relationship between the two nations. She also spoke of a promising era of development and prosperity, as well as increasing economic ties between the two nations.
She commended Jamaica on their professionalism and the good will, specifically with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. "They make my job pleasant and rewarding. I thank Minister Johnson for being here tonight, and envision the next 50 years of collaboration and partnership." She also thanked Red stripe who made Mexican beers available for the night.
In a toast, she invited Minister Kamina Johnson-Smith to the stage, as they made a toast with beers to boot.
Minister Johnson-Smith spoke of the rich, vibrant and colourful cultural presence of Mexico, stating how proud she was of the multi dimensional partnership between both countries and said she was looking forward to new collaborations in the future.
Showing their deep connection, Johnson-Smith wore green while Ambassador Jaber wore red - both Mexican colours. They later raised their margarita glass to strong bonds with shouts of Viva Mexico!
The Independence cry ceremony was next and the call and answer speech in Spanish, ended in the refrain Viva Mexico, which officially closed the formal proceedings.
The highly anticipated mariachi band followed suit. Many paid close attention to their entertaining performance in amazement, while others took the opportunity to resume mingling.
Guests were then treated to wide array of Mexican gastronomic delight.
