American designers took centre stage as Joe Biden swore the oath of office at noon on Wednesday to become the 46th president of the United States. At his side, Kamala Harris became the first woman to be vice-president. The former United States senator from California, who is of Jamaican and Indian parentage, is also the first black person and the first person of South Asian descent elected to the vice-presidency, and is now the highest-ranking woman ever to serve in government.
