Throwers star at UWI Invitational
THROWERS dominated proceedings at yesterday's UWI Invitational meet at the UWI Usain Bolt Track.
Fredrick Dacres and O'Dayne Richards recorded season-best distances in their respective events.
Dacres who won the men's discus with a throw of 66.40 metres was pleased with his effort.
"Although I could have done much better I am very pleased for a season best. This is good for me going into next week's intercollegiate championships. Also I am looking forward to the World Senior Championships in Beijing," said Dacres.
Richards, the Commonwealth champion in the men's shot put had a winning heave of 20.94 metres.
RIGHT DIRECTION
"Things are going in the right direction for me and I am happy to be on the right track for the Beijing World Championships," the MVP Track Club athlete said. Dacres followed up his discus win with 17.92m in the shot put with Christopher Brown, third with 16.36m.
National senior record holder in the men's javelin, Orrin Powell of G.C. Foster College, won the event with 69.27m. The University of Technology pair of of Orlando Thomas (65.04) and Ravian Ashman (63.80) were second and third respectively.
On the track, the University of Technology's Shericka Jackson and High Performance Centre's Zharnel Hughes stole the spotlight.
Jackson won her women's 200m heat in 23.11 with teammate Elaine Thompson second overall in 23.32.
Following his good win a week ago at the G.C. Foster Classic, Anguillan, Hughes clocked the fastest time, 20.58, in the men's 200m open.
Earlier Andrew Fisher of UTech had captured the men's collegiate 200m in 21.37.
G.C. Foster's Rhonda Whyte (57.62) had an impressive win in the women's 400m hurdles surprising the UWI's Rushell Clayton. Clayton was second in 57.72.
