Newly appointed Tivoli Gardens FC head coach Omar Edwards says he is surprised by the positive response from the players in pre-season for the upcoming Red Stripe Premier League, which kicks off on September 10.

Edwards was selected for the tough task of putting Tivoli in a challenging position, something that they have not done for the past three seasons.

He was appointed after Glendon 'Admiral' Bailey quit after saving the club from relegation last season.

"It is really a privilege and honour to be at Tivoli Gardens. I have worked over at neighbouring Boys' Town FC as assistant coach for over 10 years. Now, this is my first job as head coach in the national league," Edwards told The Gleaner yesterday.

"Well, basically, it has been a positive response. The players know that the club sets a high standard. The reception is great from the players, so it is not challenging. They are trying to do their best. We have a positive set of players," he continued.

Tivoli will be missing some regular players, but Edwards said that is expected.

"Well, a few players have left the club. They have decided to move on," he said.

Edwards is fully aware of the high expectations, especially from the club's supporters.

"I understand that pressure will be a part of the job. I want to get the players to understand the system of play and do their best," Edwards, the assistant coach of the national Under-17, team noted.

Edwards said the addition of two more teams to the championship play-offs was a positive development.

"I believe it will help to add some more excitement. It is not a bad idea for the league," he said.

Tivoli will play their opening game in the RSPL away to Harbour View.
