KC clip St George's to capture Roper Cup

A first-half brace from Treyvon Reid saw Kingston College's Manning Cup team to a 2-1 victory over St George's College in the famed Roper Cup at Emmet Park yesterday. Kingston College coach Ludlow Bernard said the performance was encouraging going into the upcoming schoolboy football season.

"It is always good to win and it was very encouraging what I got from the young ones. We have been working hard and we are hoping the effort we put out will give us success. We are still in preseason and we are looking to turn up a notch and increase the intensity of our game," he told The Sunday Gleaner.

"The team has tremendous depth and I was really thrilled based on what I saw. There were players who weren't training because of national duties and I wanted to see where they fit in and they did well. It's just to understand my concept, but it's a good look," he said.

Good feeling

Reid opened the scoring after only five minutes before breaking away to slot home the second midway the half. Alex Marshall set up Jevoun McKeller to score from four yards minutes before the interval.

"Winning the Roper Cup is a good feeling. It's not the main event, but we have to get in the habit of winning and winning trophies, and that's what we are about," Bernard added..

Kingston College captured the George Thompson Trophy for Under-14s and 16s after beating St George's 1-0 in the Pepsi (U-14) game and drawing the Colts (U-16) match 1-1. The Pancho Rankine Trophy for the Over-35s was shared after a 0-0 draw. Kingston College took home the Roper Cup after a 0-0 draw in the Under-35s and the 2-1 win in the clash of the present Manning Cup teams.
