Godfrey Stewart claim top spot in Group C of ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup
WESTERN BUREAU:
Godfrey Stewart High are now sole leaders of Zone D in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/daCosta Cup football competition, after edging Petersfield 1-0 in Savanna-la-mar yesterday to make it two wins from as many matches.
The lone goal was scored by Ronaldo Bandoo, who completed a sweeping build-up. Before that, the Petersfield defence proved stubborn.
Winning coach Oliver Slowley said the win proved how desperate his players are for success this year.
"It is always good to get a good start in a competition such as this, where the margin for error is so small," Slowley noted.
"I am very pleased with this win because Petersfield always come prepared for Godfrey, and now that we have gained three points at their expense, the focus will now shift to our next match on Thursday," he said.
Both schools entered the game confident of posting a second win in as many matches, but Petersfield failed to spark, leaving their coach Godfrey Drummond a miserable man after the defeat.
"It is still early season. You win some and you may lose some. I don't think we played to potential today at all. That was clear to see. I hope the players take stock of this dreadful performance and fix it for the next match, but we are still in it," he said.
Godfrey Stewart, winners of the daCosta Cup in 2005, have according to Slowley their best squad in several years and are aiming to do likewise.
