Patrick off to a winning start

Coach Anthony Patrick got off to a wonderful start as the new boss of promoted Maverley-Hughenden in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) after an easy 3-0 win against FC Reno at Constant Spring Complex yesterday.

Maverley-Hughenden picked up their third win of the season courtesy of goals by Andrew White in the 45th minute, Phillip Peddie, from the penalty spot in the 71st minute and Rodico Wellington (74th). It was also their first victory at their home venue.

The winners ended with ten players as their captain, Andrew Peddlar, received a red card issued by FIFA referee Kevin Morrison in the 63rd minute for violent conduct.

POSITIVE START

"It was very important to get off to a positive start in my first game as coach of Maverley-Hughenden as the team was struggling in the league," Patrick, who replaced Lijyasu Simms a week ago told The Gleaner.

"It wasn't a perfect game for us, but the intensity level was great from the players. They fought hard throughout the game and were determined, and that paid off," he reasoned.

"We kept our shape after the captain was red carded in the second half. We played with one striker and scored two other goals and that was good for the team's spirit.

GOOD VIBES

"There is still a lot of work to be done as it is a work in progress. I told the players that we had eight games remaining in the second round and we are looking to gain at least 17 points. Now, we are looking forward to the next game against Arnett Gardens," Patrick concluded.

Peddie, who scored his fifth goal of the season and the third from the penalty spot, said the coach brought good vibes during the training sessions last week.

"It is a good vibes with the new coach. The coach brings motivation to the players. This is a new beginning for us," Peddie said.

Losing coach Wendell Downswell said his players lost their tactical discipline, especially when Maverley-Hughenden went down to ten players.
