Upsetters steal the show in Guineas Trials
UPSETTERS stole the show yesterday, DISABILITY CHARM landing the Thornbird Stakes at odds of 5-1 and 32-1 longshot EL PROFESOR outfinishing 3-5 favourite ANOTHER VIGOROUS in the Prince Consort Stakes.
DISABILITY CHARM returned minus the tongue tie and figure eight, equipment she wore when narrowly losing the 1200-metre Hot Line Stakes to BAND OF GOLD on February 24.
Breaking smartly from post-position eight with Robert Halledeen, DISABILITY CHARM stalked NADESHICO, ACKEE PIE and MY SISTER in relatively slow splits, 24.4 and 48.0, before pouncing wide of rivals coming off the home turn.
However, DISABILITY CHARM had to be ridden out to win by a half-length from NADESHICO and MY SISTER, who ran a brave race, rallying strongly against the rail after being slowly into stride at the start.
The real shocker was EL PROFESOR, who made all the running under sustained pressure from ANOTHER VIGOROUS, rallying strongly in the straight after being headed off at the home turn.
Running against the rail with champion apprentice Anthony Thomas, EL PROFESOR, carrying 50.5 kilos, outbattled ANOTHER VIGOROUS, whose connections opted to have Linton Steadman ride overweight, carrying 54.5 kilos, five pounds more than his allotted weight.
A half-length separated them at the end, 1400 metres clocked in 1:26.0, four-fifths quicker than the fillies in the Thornbird Stakes.
