The local swimming fraternity received a $500,000 boost on Wednesday from brokerage firm Mayberry Investments Ltd to facilitate the staging of the Annual School Swim Meet.

Mayberry Investments Ltd, in partnership with the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica (ASAJ), will host the 20th Annual School Swim Meet at the National Aquatic Centre at the National Stadium this weekend.

Martin Lyn, president, Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica, said swimming is a sport that is a lifestyle.

"Swimming is one of the few sports that is a lifestyle. This meet is one of the longest-running school meets and sponsorship meets the ASAJ has and we have to say hats off to Mayberry for being there for the past 20 years and for bringing on sponsors that we may otherwise not have had access to," Lyn said.

"It's always a great pleasure for me to be a part of the prep and primary school meets because what it means is that there is growth in the sports, and I look forward to all the participants doing well in the meet. Thanks to Mayberry, we actually have a meet to look forward to for another consecutive year," added Lyn.

The Mayberry Investments School Swim Meet began as the company's way of contributing to the development of swimming in Jamaica and is now a well-recognised swim meet nationally with the largest number of competitors.

"Here at Mayberry, we value any role in the development of our communities, and especially, our youngsters. We realise that sports provide a very productive outlet for them, and for this reason, we do what we can to support these initiatives," explained Philbert Perry, senior VP of sales and marketing, Mayberry Investments.

"Swimming is one of several amateur sports that we support, but this event has been the signature event for our company and one that has grown into the largest swim meet in the country. Our only hope is that the competition sees more persons competing and grows from year to year," ended Perry.

This year's competition begins today with high schools and tertiary institutions and ends tomorrow with preparatory and primary schools. Races will begin at 8:00 a.m. each day.
