Knight: Young Boyz have character

National goalkeeper Amal Knight said they under-estimated the home team and almost suffered the consequences in their friendly international in Barbados on Monday night.

The Jamaicans came from 2-0 down at half-time to get a draw against the plucky Barbadians thanks to late goals from Marvin Morgan and Peter Lee Vassell (penalty).

But Knight who was rested for the match thought that the Reggae Boyz went into the game too confident and without much respect for their opponents after a 5-1 win against Grenada, another eastern Caribbean team, last Friday.

"From my perspective the players underestimated Barbados. Going into the match we thought we were too good a team for Barbados. I am not saying they are not good but we did not know much about them and we took them lightly because we came off such a big win Friday night," he told The Gleaner.

But despite the early setbacks Knight thought they were the better team by far.

"We weren't as compact as the coach wanted (first-half), we were not connecting the dots and there were problems on the field that needed fixing. But overall we gave a good account of ourselves as we came away with a draw.

"We created numerous chances, but just didn't take them, especially early in the second-half. Going forward, we need to pay more attention to the little details and that we don't take anything for granted, no matter who the opponent is and if you know about them or not," he said.

However, he thought the young team showed a lot of character to come back and earn the draw.

"In the second-half the guys came out with more purpose and the tracking was better. They looked more organised and we kept up the pressure and got two late goals. This shows that this is a good unit and the players have character, we just need to believe," he added.
