New beast in the Jungle - Kemar Phillpott poaches H'Lion on Arnett debut

Former Portmore United player Kemar Phillpott put in a masterful performance at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on the opening night of the 2018-19 Red Stripe Premier League season. Turning out for his new team, Arnett Gardens FC, the diminutive midfielder put in a performance that had his new home crowd filled with satisfaction as his team came away with the three points in a 2-1 victory over Humble Lion on Sunday.

The 24-year-old midfielder said he felt really good and was happy about making his debut for his new club, and it was all about keeping it simple.

"Firstly, I am thankful for the victory, but, for me, it was all about sticking to the game plan and instructions given to me by my coach - playing simple and passing the ball as much as I can," said the Portmore-bred midfielder.

It came as a surprise when Phillpott was transferred to the 2017 champions. However, the former Bridgeport High School player didn't give much away about his move. Instead, he said he felt it was time for a new challenge and a new team.

"I have nothing much to say there. In all honesty, I felt it was the right time for a different team and a fresh, yet different, challenge in my career. I spent four years with Portmore United, coming straight out of Bridgeport High School. It's just all about a fresh challenge," said the man who hails from Independence City.

EASY DECISION

The central midfielder said that it was not a tough choice picking Arnett Gardens because the club has consistently been at the top of the pile over the years, which made it an attractive prospect for him.

"Over the years, Portmore United, Harbour View and Arnett Gardens have always been quality teams with good players and great fans, so in making my move, I had to be playing for a good team, hence why I am here at Arnett Gardens," said Phillpott.

After his powerful performance, the crowd was disappointed when he was withdrawn late in the second half. However, the combative midfielder said he was okay with the coach's decision to take him out at that time.

"First of all, I respect the coach's decision. He probably saw I was getting a little bit fatigued and decided to take me out, so he could add fresh legs to the game. For me, it's no surprise the way the crowd reacted to me. I already feel at home because once you play quality football, it will be easy to fit into any team, and very much in the same vein, the appreciation of the fans will come," he added with a broad smile.
