Practice makes perfect - Nevers pleased with Sunshine Girls training ahead of T&T, England series

Assistant coach of Jamaica's senior women's netball team, Winston Nevers, said the Sunshine Girls have intensified their preparations ahead of their two-match and three-Test series against Trinidad and Tobago and England, respectively.  

The Sunshine Girls will face Trinidad and Tobago in a two-match series October 7 and 9 before engaging rivals England in three-Tests on October 11, 13 and 15. 

Nevers told The Gleaner that the Sunshine Girls management staff has been working assiduously to ensure that the Jamaicans are very prepared for both series.

“We have the male team preparing with us and they are helping us to live up to the expectations of everyone,” said Nevers. 
“We have been having good training sessions from about three months ago because our fitness trainer has been doing a great work,” he said.

Nevers added that both series form part of their preparations for the Fast5 Netball World Series, which will be held at the end of the next month as well as next year World Championships in England. 

“We are getting there and by the time Trinidad and England get here, we know that we will get it right,” Nevers said. 

“These games are very serious for us because we have the Fast5 coming up in late October, so we have to do two types of training at the same time. They have been taking a lot out us, but we're trying to do our best in managing the players ahead of this hectic schedule,” he said. 

The veteran coach added that the Sunshine Girls have been boosted with the return of overseas-based captain Jhaniele Fowler-Reid, Shamera Sterling, Shimona Nelson.

“We are having a number of senior players coming back from their club duties in England, Australia and New Zealand and so we want to see how best we can work things out now,” Nevers said. 
“I am excited about this series and I am expecting us to play well. We are going to play Trinidad before, so we will get that practice and that competition going into the England series," Nevers pointed out.  

"Marvette (Anderson, head coach) and I will be bringing something different because we are working on their concentration in the last part of the game and we are glad for this tournament before the World Championships next year,” he said.
