C'down's Trevelen calm under pressure

After watching teammate Shaquille Bradford miss a first half penalty, Camperdown High's match winner, Basil Trevelen, kept his cool and netted from the spot in the 86th minute to hand his school a 1-0 win over Excelsior in their second round Digicel/ISSA first-leg Manning Cup match at Stadium East yesterday.

Trevelen dedicated his goal to Bradford. He had no second thoughts when called on to take the spot kick. The former St Mary's College student, in his first Manning Cup season for Camperdown, came on midway the second-half and found it tough but said that the moment the penalty was awarded he knew he was the man for the job.

"That (missed penalty) only inspired me to do better coming off the bench to execute what the coach told me," he said.

FIRST GOAL

This was the attacking midfielder/left-back's first for Camperdown goal and he was pleased to get off the mark with such a vital strike.

"This is my first goal for the team and it's a very important one. This (win) is very good for us, to keep our minds focused until the next leg. We know exactly what they are coming with Friday, but we just have to work as a team and play team football."

The Tivoli Gardens resident's aim is to earn a scholarship and he noted that the goal was devoted to Bradford, who after missing the first penalty was fouled for the second, which Trevelen coolly converted.

Meanwhile, coach Chris Bender, said it appeared as if it would not be their day, but their resilience came through.

"Sometimes in games like these you have to hope that things happen. We created enough chances to win the game from the first-half, including the penalty. They (Excelsior) didn't threaten our goal much but it was a good test," he said.

Excelsior coach Daniel Riley said the result was disappointing.

"In terms of the result we are disappointed but the greatest thing is we have an opportunity to do better on Friday," he said.
