Jamaican striker Khadija Shaw gets high to head to goal during the first international friendly between Jamaica and Chile at the National Stadium last Thursday. The Reggae Girlz won 1-0.

Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz will be seeking consecutive wins over Chile today when both teams meet in the second match of their two-game friendly series at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in St James. Match time is 7 p.m.

The Reggae Girlz recorded a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Chileans in their opening match on Thursday courtesy of a Marlo Sweatman ninth-minute goal.

The Reggae Girlz were very dominant in the opening game, and head coach Hue Menzies says he is expecting another good display from the Jamaicans.

“We are going for the victory because we have to have that sort of mentality because the World Cup starts for us now,” said Menzies.

UNDERDOGS

“We are the underdogs, and so we have to make sure that we get it right at all times whenever we step out on the field. We have to own our soil, and so we are going for the win on Sunday,” he said.

Menzies added that he would be making a number of changes to his team ahead of today’s encounter.

“This is an evaluation week camp, and so we are going to have different changes,” said Menzies. “We feel that athletically, we can keep up with things and the Chileans.”

The coach has called on fans in the Second City to show their support for the FIFA Women’s World Cup-bound Reggae Girlz.

“Jamaicans need to come out in their numbers in Montego Bay like how they did on Thursday because we need all the support that we can get here for the girls,” Menzies said.

The Reggae Girlz are ranked 53rd in the world while the Chileans are rated at 38. Both teams are using the matches as part of their preparations for this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament, which will be held in France in June.

The Jamaicans are drawn in Group C of the 2019 FIFA World Cup Finals alongside Italy, Brazil, and Australia. Chile will face the mighty United States, Sweden, and Thailand in Group F.

The Reggae Girlz will first face Brazil on June 9 while Chile are down to oppose Sweden on June 11 in their opening match.
