IT was the same story for the second year in a row as the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport ruled supreme in capturing both male and female titles at the two-day NCB Intercollegiate Track and Field Championships, which ended on Saturday at the National Stadium. On the male side, the Maurice Wilson-coached team tallied 207 points while the University of Technology (UTech) was second with 144; followed by University of the West Indies (UWI) on 129; Mico University College, 78.5; and Excelsior Community College, 47, closing out the top five. It was even more impressive for them among the females after topping the meet with 228.50 points. UTech, 155.50; UWI, 102; Mico, 88; and Church Teachers’ College, 24, rounded out the top five.

G.C. Foster College’s Tissanna Hickling, formerly of St Jago High School, had a double triumph, retaining her 100m title and capturing the triple jump open. Hickling, who had an injury to her face on the warm-up track and who later had to run by herself in qualifying for the final, turned out an easy winner in the end after clocking 11.56 seconds, getting the better of the UTech duo of Kasheika Cameron, 11.61, and Shockoria Wallace, 11.63, who finished second and third, respectively. Hickling, who won the long jump last year, opted for the triple jump this time and was a very impressive winner with 13.62m as teammate Ave-Anna Venair was second with 12.26m.

WILLIAMS WINs 200M

Ashley Williams, the former Holmwood Technical sprinter, captured the Women’s 200m for G.C. Foster College after getting the better of Mico’s Tiffany James. Williams won in 23.65 seconds, ahead of James, 23.88 seconds, with Ishara Scarlett of UWI taking third in 24.46 seconds.

Former National Senior 100m champion Oshane Bailey captured the Men’s 100m for G.C. Foster College after stopping the clock at 10.22 seconds, getting the better of teammate Odaine McIntosh, second in 10.38 seconds, as Mico University College’s Hujaye Cornwall finished third in 10.49 seconds.

Kemario Eldemire gave the champions a big win in the Men’s 400m hurdles, after taking the event in 50.22 seconds to upstage Malik James-King, of UTech, as the former Calabar High stand-out finished second in 50.39 seconds, with Alexis Kern of UWI taking third in 50.70 seconds.

QUINELLA FOR MICO

National senior representative Jamari Rose, competing for the Mico University College, was best in the Men’s 200m. Competing in a negative wind speed of 2.2m per second, the former Calabar High School athlete won the event in 21.13 seconds. It was a quinella for Mico here as following up on his bronze medal in the 100 metres earlier, Cornwall finished second for the silver in 21.55 seconds as Mazhino Barrett of UWI was third in 21.63 seconds.

Commonwealth Games champion Fedrick Dacres, representing UWI, was a double winner at the meet. Dacres won the discus throw with a world leading and meet record throw of 65.17m, removing teammate Traves Smikle's 2013 mark of 63.48m in the process. Dacres also won the shot put after heaving 18.47m, getting the better of teammate Christopher Brown, who threw a distance of 18.02m.

There was a big upset in the Men’s 4x100m as Mico, with a brilliant anchor from Rose, raced to a school record of 39.44 seconds to capture the event, relegating UTech to second in 39.98 seconds, and G.C. Foster College third in 40.31 seconds.

The meet ended on a high as Mico and G.C. Foster College were involved in an epic 4x400m relay, but despite a big run from Rose, it was the champions who prevailed in 3:06.41 minutes, ahead of Mico, second in 3:06.66, with UWI back in third in 3:11.72.

G.C. Foster dominated the relays after an impressive 44.24 seconds in the 4x100m to get the better of UTech, 44.36, while the Spanish Town-based institution easily took home the 4x400m in 3:47.34 minutes.
