STGC end Hydel run in Walker Cup

Hydel High School’s reign as ISSA Walker Cup champions ended as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to St George’s College (STGC) in their quarter-final match at Stadium East field yesterday. Chantomoi Taylor made the breakthrough in the 52nd minute then Hydel’s Jesean Gordon put the ball in his own net to give the Neville Bell coached outfit another chance at schoolboy silverware this season.
STGC Assistant coach Marcel Gayle credited his team for coming to life after starting slowly in the first half.
“We started a little bit lacklustre,” he said. “We talked about it [at half-time] and the kids agreed. We said that we were going to give it a push and they gave it a push and ended up with two goals.
Hydel coach Nicholy Finlayson said that his team’s lack of match sharpness affected their preparations.
“St George’s have been playing a lot of football and we waited over two weeks to start the Walker Cup season and [yesterday] showed the boys’ lack of match preparation,” he said.
In the early game of the double-header, Camperdown High brushed past Mona High 4-0 to book a semi-final place. The Christopher Bender coached Camperdown recorded their third win against Mona this season through goals from Kenly Deacon and Shaqueil Bradford in the first half, and Tivelle Edwards and Shawn Daley in the second half. Mona’s defeat was further compounded when assistant coach Anthony Bennett was shown a straight red for verbally abusing the referee in the second half and Dellneill Pinnock was sent off for a violent challenge on Camperdown’s Giovanni Morgan towards the end.
A total of three red cards were shown yesterday as Hydel’s Jesean Gordon was given his marching orders on the stroke of full time when he elbowed a St George’s player in the face.
At the Ashemheim Stadium, St Catherine High got past Charlie Smith 2-0 in the early game of that double-header then Excelsior dispatched Jonathan Grant 4-2 on penalties after the match finished 2-2 in regulation and extra time.
