Smith back in training after car accident

World Athletics Championships women's 4x100m relay team gold medallist Jonielle Smith was involved in a car crash in Florida last weekend.

The MVP International athlete was travelling in a sedan on the I-95 Expressway in Florida when the car was hit from behind, spun, and then hit by another vehicle. 

The Gleaner understands that the vehicle was seriously damaged but the injuries sustained by the passengers were not considered life-threatening.

MVP Track Club president Bruce James says that while he does not have the full details of the accident, Smith is fine and already back in training, preparing for the upcoming track and field season.

Smith will be vying for a spot on Jamaica's sprint team at the Tokyo Olympic Games next July.

The 23-year-old ran the third leg of the 4x100m relay final in Doha, Qatar, handing off to Shericka Jackson, who anchored the Jamaicans to gold. The team also featured 100m world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Natalliah Whyte.
