Griffiths, Lawrence pocket top awards for JC meet

LEWISVILLE High’s Deondre Griffiths and Kobe Lawrence of Calabar High walked away with top honours at yesterday’s JC/Purewater/R Danny Williams Awards function held at Jamaica College’s Karl Hendrickson Auditorium. Griffiths and Lawrence were named the top female and male athletes, respectively, of the meet which was held two weeks ago at the Ashenheim Stadium.

Thirteen-year-old Griffiths was rewarded for her record leap in the Class Four long jump where she had a winning mark of 5.43 metres. Lawrence, who garnered some 20 points at the meet, got his award for his outstanding efforts in Class Two where he was first in both the discus and shot put events. He had a record throw of 53.59m in the discus and the shot put with a heave of 17.61 metres. Camperdown High’s Class Three thrower Victoria Christie was the runner-up among the females where she garnered 20 points which included wins in both the shot put and discus. Kingston College’s Aro Tamoi was the runner-up among the males. He won the Class One 1500m in a record 4:01.44 and the 5000m Open in 15:55.84.

Chairman of the organising committee and meet director Ian Forbes hailed the athletes for their efforts. “The meet was a tremendous success and a number of records were broken and we had many outstanding performances. The coaches must also be lauded for the preparation of their athletes and we are looking forward to another for successful staging next year,” Forbes said.

Class Three – winner – Patrick Rosegreen- Cornwall College – 12 pts. 2nd LJ- 5.85m, 5th HJ- 1.55m

Class Two – winner- Kobe Lawrence 20 pts.

Class One – winner – Aron Tanui (KC) 20 pts
