Davis set to debut at STETHS Invitational

EDWIN Allen High School’s outstanding sprinter Kevona Davis will make her long-awaited season debut today, when she competes in the 200 metres at the St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) Invitational meet in Santa Cruz.

Davis, the 2019 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships Class Two girls double sprint champion, will make her first appearance in Class One.

Twin sisters Tia and Tina Clayton will also make their Class Two season debut as Edwin Allen look to make a strong statement ahead of the expected challenges this season from a rejuvenated St Jago High and the very consistent Hydel.

Head coach of Edwin Allen Michael Dyke is expecting good execution from his three top sprinters today.

“This is their first race of the season, and the focus will be on execution. The objective for all three will be the IAAF World Under-20 Championships, and that is the reason why there had been a delay in them taking the track this season, as I want to ensure that they peak at the right moment,” said Dyke.

Today’s meet is one of three on the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association’s (JAAA) calendar today, with The Queen’s Grace Jackson Meet at the National Stadium and the Northern Championships in Priory, St Ann, also taking place.

STETHS Invitational’s meet director, Reynaldo Walcott, is pleased with the support for the meet and is expecting great competition.

“We will have all the events on the track from 100m to 1500m, and we have included 400 metres for Class Four girls as they do not get the chance to do this event at Champs and this is a great opportunity for them to compete as most coaches will not want to run them in the 100m and 200m because they want to concentrate on those who are competing at the major championships,” Walcott said.

“Edwin Allen will be here in full force, while St Jago will be sending their middle-distance athletes, and there is also Spaulding and Rusea’s on the female side. The male side will be well represented by a strong contingent of schools from the west while Calabar and Jamaica College will be sending their throwers,” Walcott added.

The first event will get under way at 8:30 a.m. with the High School Girls Open 400m hurdles.
