Eroy lands easy win at Caymanas

UNITED STATES-bred EROY yesterday grabbed the lead entering the backstretch and was never headed, foiling local runner TOMOHAWK’s bid to stake his claim as a classic contender in the opening event at nine furlongs and 25 yards.

Sent off as the 1-9 favourite after making his three-year-old debut with a second-place run behind classy MAHOGANY at six and a half furlongs, TOMOHAWK failed to handle the route race and was hopelessly outsped going two turns.

Though going in chase of EROY coming off the home turn, Wayne DaCosta-trained TOMOHAWK ran one-paced in the stretch run and was beaten by almost 10 lengths in a pedestrian time of 2:03.0.

EROY found extra under apprentice Anthony Allen, running out an easy winner at odds of 5-2 for trainer Richard Azan.

Racing resumed at Caymanas Park with an eight-event card after last Saturday’s meet was cancelled due to a virus, which had spread through the stable area, causing some horses to spike fever and refuse processed feed.

Reports are that most horses have recovered and this weekend’s meet should be better supported as trainers prepare their charges for the three-year-old classics, which get under way with the 1000 and 2000 Guineas in mid-April.
