Former champion Jockey Shane Ellis is expected to be out of the saddle for six weeks with a fractured collarbone, after falling from his mount during exercise last Saturday.

Ellis told The Gleaner that the incident took place while he was galloping a horse at the round mile during exercise on Saturday, November 7.

He was rushed to the Spanish Town Hospital in St Catherine, where it was revealed that along with a fractured collarbone, Ellis also suffered a few bruised ribs.

“It is a setback for me, but in this game you have to expect anything, and so when injuries come you have to deal with it because this is a very risky sport that you are participating in,” said Ellis.

“An injury like this will only get you stronger because this is something that can happen at any time, and so you have to be prepared to deal with these things, mentally and physically,” he added.

The veteran jockey underscored that he was knocked unconscious when he fell from the horse and only regained consciousness in the hospital.

“I am not going to say it is the track surface (that caused the accident), because I don’t know what happened because I was out when I fell off the horse,” said Ellis. “I just want to reassure my fans that this is just another setback, and in life you do have setbacks; and so I will be back much stronger and better once this injury has healed properly.”

Ellis, who is also the president of the Jamaica Jockeys’ Guild, only just recently returned to the saddle from a five-day suspension for breaching the Jamaica Racing Commission betting rules.
