Sheffield Wednesday manager and former national defender Darren Moore says that the door has not closed on a potential move for national midfielder Ravel Morrison despite the decision not to sign the player for the remainder of the season.
Morrison, 28, who has been without a club since January, has been on trial with Wednesday since last month. However, the club opted not to offer him a short-term deal. Morrison left Dutch club ADO Den Haag by mutual consent earlier in the year after only lasting four months into his one-year deal that he signed in September, the shortest time he has spent at a club in his career.
Moore told the Yorkshire Examiner on Thursday that while Morrison did well during his trial, the time he would need to adjust puts him in an unfavourable situation. Despite the decision, Moore says that a future move for the player has not been ruled out.
"Ravel is excellent and did so well when he came in," he said. "I just felt at the time, that we needed people to hit the ground running.
"That was the only thing really. The door's not closed on him. For the future, we'll keep in touch with him."
Moore who made three international appearances for the Reggae Boyz between 1999 and 2000, was named Sheffield Wednesday manager on March 1, with the club in a precarious position in the relegation places in the English Football League Championship. He said that it would be difficult for Morrison from a physical standpoint to transition into the team immediately.
"With most free transfers, to find one that's about to go physically straight away is hard," he said. "Nothing can replicate training, side-by-side with fellow professionals."
With eight games remaining in the season, Sheffield Wednesday are in 23rd place with 32 points, seven away from safety.
Morrison, the Manchester United academy product, only made five appearances for Den Haag during his stint with four of those being in league play. He is seeking his 12th club in his much-travelled career which has included stops in England, Mexico, Sweden and Italy. He made his international debut for the Reggae Boyz last November during the two-game series against Saudi Arabia, and although he was initially called up for the last game against the United States on March 25, he declined the invitation.
