Lewis’ hat-trick inspires William Knibb

MARK LEWIS’ hat-trick inspired William Knibb Memorial High School to a come-from-behind 4-1 win over Herbert Morrison Technical High School in their Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) rural area daCosta Cup football match at Irwin High School playing field in St James yesterday.

Herbert Morrison took the lead in the 13th minute through a Damarion Spence strike. However, Lewis found the equaliser for William Knibb in the 26th minute and then returned nine minutes later to score and give them the ascendancy.

William Knibb, the boys in purple, put the game to rest in the second half with Lewis capping off his hat-trick with a 73rd-minute strike, before Jaymar Skyers got his name on the scorecard in 88th.

IMPRESSED

Dwight Jeremiah, coach of William Knibb, was impressed by the character his frontman showed in leading their comeback.

“From what I have seen in this zone, I don’t see the defensive unit that can cope with him when he is up for it and today he was up for it. His team went down a goal and he took it up on his shoulders to really lead the comeback. That character is something that I like,” Jeremiah said.

“I also have to make mention our defensive midfielder Orville Brown who had a great game today and really made our attacking players excel,” he added.

Jeremiah said his team learnt a lot from giving up a two-goal lead against Cornwall College on Tuesday, to show a lot of composure in what was a convincing win yesterday.

“I said on Tuesday that the guys would learn. Today it was not just the comeback, but the management of the game was much better,” Jeremiah said.

“We realised that Herbert Morrison was not dealing with the crosses well, their centre halves were a bit erratic. We decided to let them make a lot of decisions. I think the boys did well, so it’s just a matter of keeping them grounded and getting out of this zone,” he added.

In the second game at the venue, Cornwall College drew 0-0 with parish rivals St James High School.
