CG2022 | Sunshine Girls through to first Commonwealth final
Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls booked are through to their first-ever Commonwealth Games final after defeating New Zealand 67-51 in the semi-finals in Birmingham, England this morning.
In fact, it is the first ever major final for the Sunshine Girls, who are ranked third in the world.
The Jamaicans were quick out of the blocks and never looked back, leading from start to finish.
At half-time, the Connie Francis-led unit led the Silver Ferns 36-19, before extending their advantage to 52-35 at the end of the third quarter.
Despite being outscored 16-15 by New Zealand in the final stanza, the Sunshine Girls had already done enough to secure the victory.
Captain Jhaniele Fowler led the way for the Jamaicans with a perfect 54 goals from 54 attempts.
She received support from Shanice Beckford, who was also perfect with 10 goals from 10 tries and Shimona Nelson three goals from three attempts.
Grace Nweke top scored for New Zealand with 24 goals from 24 attempts.
