Cavalier, Olympic clash in JWPL feature

Cavalier coach Everdean Scarlett will have a tough assignment when the Zone B leaders take on Olympic Gardens, the second-place team in Zone A, in the feature Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) game today at the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence at 3 p.m.

Scarlett pointed out that the last time the teams met in a two-way tie, they got the better of Olympic Gardens in the first match but their opponents came back to take the second leg and the tie.

“Olympic have always been a tough team. The last time we played them we won the first leg 2-1 and they then beat us 4-2.

“They didn’t have the best start (this season) but they are growing in confidence and they are doing pretty good. They are second in their group.

“But I feel petty confident. We have a few niggling injuries but nothing to stop us performing at our best. I welcome the challenge,” he said.

The addition of overseas-based player Shaeyenne Bonnick, who scored four goals last weekend, has made them a greater threat, Scarlett said.

“She came and said she wanted to play for us. She works really hard in training and she adds some quality to our attacks. She is exciting and want to showcase her talent.

“But the game is played on the field and Olympic are a pretty tough team, so we have to go out and see if we get a favourable result,” he added.

Olympic’s Michael Peart said injuries have weakened his team but thinks they can make the adjustments and get a result.

“We will try to put out the best team. One of our key players is not 100 per cent, so that will affect us.

“But we do not want to lose anymore games. We have lost three points in the boardroom already,” he said.

Olympic are six points behind zone leaders Frazsiers Whip, who have 18. Cavalier lead their zone with 15 points, three more than Vere.

Peart noted that they will be keeping a special eye on Bonnick and that they must dig deep to get something from the game.

“The are making a good run. They even got in an overseas player who is scoring some goals, so we will be keeping a close eye on her.

“We have done our homework and will make the necessary adjustments. A gutsy performance is what it’s going to take to get a positive result because we are not at our best,” he stated.
