Clovis to start JPL stint in round two with beleaguered Maroons

All the talk about a possible withdrawal from the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) from newcomers Chapelton Maroons has gone out the door, as the club is set to have their new coach when the second round of matches kicks off on February 12.

Brazilian Clovis de Oliveira is expected to officially begin his first stint in the local premier league when Chapelton Maroons face Harbour View at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

This was confirmed by interim coach Nigel Stewart who also confirmed that the Clarendon-based club will continue to honour their fixtures as they take on Dunbeholden at the Stadium East next Sunday.

Stewart outlined that four of the six players that were ill last week following their no-show against Mount Pleasant have returned to training and the club is expecting to sign a few more players before the weekend.

“We are expected to get an additional six players with two coming from Arnett Gardens, two from Molynes United, and one each from Cavalier and Tivoli Gardens. We should have about 15 players on our roster for this weekend’s game, and the guys are upbeat and ready to go again,” said Stewart.

Following their sanction and docking of six of their eight points by the Jamaica Football Federation for the no-show, coach Stewart said the players are still working hard to put those distractions behind them, and they are keen to get themselves off the foot of the JPL table.

“The players are still focused and despite all that is happening in the club, the only way for us now is up, and the way we can do that is by just winning,” he added.

Stewart, who had coaching stints with Sporting Central Academy back in 2005 and Mount Pleasant back in 2018 will be the man calling the shots for the remaining games in the round and he is confident that he can turn around the fortunes of the club.

“I am no stranger to the Premier League and the players have responded to me well. I have my plans for the upcoming games because I have gathered some notes on the teams, it’s for us to just go out and execute those plans and we will get positive results,” Stewart said.
