VETERAN COACH Michael Carr, the man in charge of the Wolmer’s Girls track and field programme for the past 36 years, has heaped praise on his team after the school finished sixth on 111 points at last week’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Championships.

“It is a wonderful feeling knowing that the girls were able to score more than 100 points and finish as the top team in the Corporate Area. The talent of the athletes came to the forefront at the championships,” said an elated Carr. His Class Three team, led by Natrice East, was outstanding. East scored a big win over defending champion Theianna Lee Terrelonge of Edwin Allen High in the 200 metres after finishing second in the 100 metres.

“It was indeed a very good overall performance from the team, especially in Class Three, where they were led by East, and Tiana Marshall, who won the sprint hurdles,” added Carr. He also spoke highly of Class Four sprint hurdler Jadea Harris and Class One sprinter Mickayla Gardener. Harris won the Class Four 70 metres hurdles in 11.05 seconds while Gardener was second in the Class One 200m in 23.89 seconds. The Class Three 4x100 metres team won the event to remain unbeaten throughout the season.

Carr stated that he was a bit surprised that his team came out on top in the Corporate Area.

“When I looked on what other teams were doing up to the penultimate day, I was a bit concerned, but in the end, we achieved, and that was good,” Carr said, adding that his team had improved since Corporate Area Development Meet.

“Champs was about quality over quantity, and this made a big difference in the athletes’ performances at Champs,” he stated.

“We are disappointed that we were not able to finish in the top five, but for us, it was the health of athletes over points as there were a few injury concerns and I was not going to sacrifice them for points. A few athletes were pulled out of individual events to concentrate on the relays, and that cost us some points,” the Wolmer’s Girls coach said. Wolmer’s Girls lost fifth spot by five points to St Catherine High, who ended on 116 points.

In conclusion, Carr said it was good to see that over six teams were able to score more than 100 points at the Championships and added that it was great for the future of the sport.
