The St Ann Cricket Association is seeking to ensure that female cricketers at the primary school level get some amount of exposure by ruling that teams in the primary schools 20-over competition must field a female player or play one short.

There is no cricket competition for girls at the primary level, hence the move to facilitate those girls who may be interested in the sport.

The Odyssey Cable Vision-sponsored St Ann Primary Schools 20-over cricket competition bowls off today with a total of 18 schools, drawn from South West St Ann, taking part.

The teams are divided into three groups of six and will be battling to make the June 16 finals at the St D’Acre playing field in St Ann.

Four matches are scheduled on today’s opening day with doubleheaders at two venues.

In Group A, at the St D’Acre Community Centre, Gibraltar will take on Linton Park at 9:30 a.m., after which Madras will play Watt Town, starting at noon.

In Group C, at Aboukir High School, Bohemia will play Aboukir in the first match at 9:30 a.m.,then Clarksonville will play Mount Moriah at noon.

The competition continues tomorrow with four more games.

In Group B, at Aabuthnott Gallimore High School grounds, Bethany will play Murray in the opening game at 9:30 a.m., after which Grants Mountain play Higgins Land at noon.

In Group C, at Aboukir, Eccleston play Charlton in the opening game, before Clarksonville take on Aboukir.

Four more matches are scheduled for Thursday to close off the first week, after which the competition resumes next Wednesday, May 24.
