Meet record for busy Morrison

WORLD ATHLETICS Championships 4x100 metres relay silver medallist Natasha Morrison warmed up for her crucial Diamond League 100 metres race in Brussells tomorrow by winning the event yesterday in Roverto, Italy, in a meet record 11 seconds flat.

Competing at the Palio Citta Della Quercia World Athletics Continental Silver Tour, Morrison got the better of the United States Twaneisha Terry, second in 11.06, and Gina Bass of Gambia, third in 11.08 seconds. Jamaica’s Briana Williams had to settle for fifth in 11.22.

Morrison’s winning time broke the 2016 meet record of 11.02 seconds, held by another Jamaican, Christania Williams.

Three other Jamaicans, Shanieka Ricketts in the women’s triple jump, Oblique Seville in the men’s 100 metres, and Rusheen McDonald in the men’s 400 metres, were also winners.

Amoi Brown was second in the women’s 100 metres hurdles.

Ricketts continued to show good form following the World Championships with a good series of marks in the triple jump, the best of them marking the sand at 14.92 metres. The mark was a millimetre behind her 14.93 personal best.

Thea Lafond of the Dominican Republic took second with 14.67 metres, and Dovile Kilty of Lithuania was third with 14.04.

Like he did in Switzerland two days earlier, Seville picked up a win in the men’s 100 metres, clocking 10.00 seconds.

On Monday, Seville had to stave off the fast-finishing Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya for the win. Yesterday, Seville had an easier time of defeating the Kenyan, who clocked 10.15 seconds for the runner-up spot. Mouhamadou Fall of France was third in 10.22. The other Jamaicans in the event, Michael Campbell, was fourth in 10.29, and Rohan Watson was eighth in 10.45.

McDonald picked up another win in the men’s 400 metres, clocking 45.46 seconds as Manuel Sanders of Germany, 45.53, and Zakithi Nene of South Africa, 45.69, finished second and third, respectively.

Brown had to settle for second in the women’s 100 metres hurdle, clocking 12.85 seconds to finish behind Sarah Lavin of Ireland, 12.78, while Taliiyah Brooks of the United States was third in 12.91 seconds.

There was no luck for Orlando Bennett in the men’s 110 metres hurdles as he could only manage seventh in 14.03 seconds as Francois Mendy Louis of Senegal won in 13.40 seconds.

Rajindra Campbell had to settle for sixth in the men’s shot put with 20.24 metres, where Zane Weir of Italy won the event with a meet record 21.86 metres.
