Reggae Girl Khadija Shaw (second right) is all smiles during a signing ceremony with Powerade at the Rok Hotel in Kingston yesterday. Looking on are from left: Chantellee McDonald, brand manager, Powerade; Andrew Mahfood, chief executive officer, Wisynco Group; and Nadine Gosine, portfolio marketing manager, Coca Cola.

REGGAE GIRLZ captain, Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw is the newest brand ambassador of Coca Cola’s sports drink, Powerade.

Andrew Mahfood, chief executive officer of Wisynco Group Limited, speaking at the ROK Hotel in Kingston, where the announcement was made, said the partnership would extend beyond the perimeters of Powerade and sports.

“She (Khadija Shaw) is now the brand ambassador for Powerade, and she will represent the company in everything that she does, and as part of the Coca Cola company, she can go much further with them as well. We plan, as we do with all our brand ambassadors, to not only work with her with Powerade in sports, but we’re also going to be working with her in her community,” said Mahfood.

According to Mahfood, forging the partnership was easy.

“The decision was very simple. Khadija is not only the greatest footballer to come from the Caribbean, but her sense of purpose as an individual and all the strings of awards made it a no-brainer for Coca Cola to go after ‘Bunny’ and successfully get her. We’re hoping that youngsters can have a role model at the level of Shaw and strive to become what she has become,” the CEO said.

Shaw did not hide her surprise.

“I think it’s very exciting. I was back in the UK, and I got a message from my agent that Powerade was involved, and I couldn’t really believe it until it came through. And while going through the process, I was, like, ‘Is it really happening?’ For me, I’m all about empowering and motivating, and I think partnering with Powerade will make that happen,” said Shaw.

According to Shaw, her drive to do well has much to do with her Crescent District, Spanish Town, background.

“I came from humble beginnings, and I know what it feels like to not have anything. For me, every time I go on the pitch, I try to give my best effort because I know that young girls and boys are looking at me for inspiration, and I try to keep evolving, not only as a player, but also as a person,” Shaw added.
