Coach Whitmore hails players after 4-1 win in daCosta Cup opener
CORNWALL COLLEGE’S head coach, Theodore Whitmore, heaped praise on his team after they came from behind to score an emphatic 4-1 win over Herbert Morrison Technical High School in their opening match of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup on Saturday night.
“It is the first game of the season, I like the enthusiasm of the players. When they fell behind, they came back in the game and pushed on to win the game. I believe it was a decent performance by the guys. We have to just take it one game at a time and see how we can improve after each game,” Whitmore told The Gleaner.
In a Zone A fixture which was played at Montego Bay Sports Complex, Herbert Morrison went in front after seven minutes, courtesy of Quezayne Channer. In the 11th minute, Shaheem Bernard levelled for Cornwall. Cornwall’s Mekhi Foster put Cornwall in front in the 21st minute to make things interesting. Miguel Arnold added to Herbert Morrison’s woes in the 53rd minute, followed by captain Dante Escoffery in the 80th minute to finish off their opponents.
Herbert Morrison’s assistant coach, Gary Grant, said the team will have to do more work in training.
“We have to go back on the training ground and see if we can execute a bit better. We have to stay focused and regroup again. Our mindset was to go out there and give a challenge, which we did. A few minutes after scoring, the players lost concentration. That is one of the key things we have to work on,” Grant said.
