Since its arrival, Fiction has been like an oasis to thirsty travellers.

"It has brought a major difference to nightlife. We brought the premium nightclub atmosphere ... focused heavily on an upscale environment that has been maintained," said Tahir Garcia, marketing coordinator.

Despite being a nightcap venue for RW, Fiction does serve finger food, and last year's Restaurant Week offered a wider menu. For 2010 though, the team has tweaked things.

"This year, we further understand the core of what Fiction is and we're not deviating from that. It's a party, not a restaurant. So that has shifted the paradigm," he explained. "We have a rotation of DJs, carefully selected, who support the vision and maintain that standard. So you won't have a lot of talking over the microphone, it's just the music." The focus at Fiction is on teamwork and protecting the increasingly-popular Fiction name.

brand building

"There are no one-off decisions. It's all based on brand building and protection of the brand. It (a proposed event or initiative) has to tie in with the brand," he said.

Part of the team is bartender Jermaine Christie, who's been in the business since he left high school about 12 years ago.

"I went to Trinidad and Tobago on vacation and a friend who worked at TGIFridays showed me bartending," he explained. His friend began working at the Jamaican TGIFridays as he did. It was on-the-job training and he really got into it. Other stops included Jamrock and Rib Kage. He's been at Fiction for nearly a year and loves the vibe.

"It's crazy in here. It's a really nice environment for people to come and enjoy. Other places you're cramped up but here it's comfortable." He loves mixing and he playfully boasts, "I do make a good Appleton Martini. I get good compliments from the ladies." As for his favourite drink: "Good old Johnnie Walker and ginger ale."
