Caribbean Maritime Institute shines in sports

Best known for its unique shipping-industry-specific programme offerings, applied research, and innovation, the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) recently gained additional attention from its thriving co-curricular activities. The Jamaica Inter-Collegiate Sports Association and the JAMFIT All-Star Cheerleading Competition provided the platforms on which the institute excelled in sports last semester.

The CMI competed in netball, football, and basketball against other tertiary level institutions over a period of two months and the teams were awarded for their sportsmanship, participation, and overall success.

The football team enjoyed a fruitful season, beating numerous teams in its quest for victory. They emerged the overall winners of Division Two after defeating the Vocational Training Development Institute (VTDI) for the second time last month with a convincing 2-1 score. The team will now compete next year in the Division One category of the competition. Captain and final-year student Keldon Green believes that the team's strong defence was an advantage over the other teams and that that contributed to their victory.

DOMINATED CHEERLEADING

The cheerleading squad (the CMI Spartans) also represented the institute commendably. They won the tertiary category of the competition, were placed third in the dance category, and secured third position overall, ahead of the University of West Indies (UWI). Cheer captain Levaughn Brown is proud of the team's achievements because he believes it sets the stage for greater accomplishments next year. He stated that the team had a very good coach, had learnt a lot this year, and with continued training and dedication, the squad would ensure that CMI would retain its position as the top tertiary-level cheerleading team.

The netball team finished third in the national inter-collegiate netball competition, and the basketball team currently battles for third position.

The executive director, Dr Fritz Pinnock; the student services manager, Tesha Walker-Brown, and coaches of the respective teams are especially proud of the teams and believe that the success can be attributed to the recently acquired multi-purpose field that facilitates frequent training. The field also made it possible for the CMI to host home matches for the first time.
