I wish to record sincere congratulations to the Shipping Association of Jamaica as it celebrates 75 years of active participation in the development of all aspects of Jamaica's maritime industry, particularly the Port of Kingston.

The association was first registered as a trade union at its formation. The first objective during a period of instability within the labour market was to manage and protect the labour force on the waterfront, as well as safeguard the interests of its members.

It is an established fact that the association does not act alone but actively cooperate with Government agencies, other trade unions and private-sector entities in seeking to achieve its objectives for this we are thankful.

We are even more appreciative of the social and welfare programmes such as education and training for its members and their children, as well as effective community-outreach programmes and involvement in Caribbean Shipping, which have become hallmarks of its contribution to national and regional development.

As the Association moves forward into the future, may you continue to grow from strength to strength.
